National sandcastle competition at Westward Ho! beach

IT'S BACK FOR GOOD!

The North Devon Hospice National Sandcastle Competition had sat dormant for many years, we resurrected it last year....Westward Ho! has an amazing beach for this, there are some spirited builders here and access to the old construction crews from past events. The Hospice is a wonderful cause, so for the 2nd year the National Sandcastle Competition is back at Westward Ho!

ADULT & KIDS COMPETITION

There will be a separate Sandcastle Competition for Adults and also Junior/Kids running at the same time. It will be held on the beach in front of the slip way/promenade and will be visible from all around the village. Event HQ will be on the Promenade. There will be live entertainment throughout the day to keep the constructors spirits high. First, Second, Third adults and first, second and thirds kids will receive a very special glass trophy that has been specially made by Dartington Crystal, Torrington.

ADULTS RULES 16+ YEARS OLD. ENTRY £25 PER TEAM

-Teams to have a maximum number of six adults (16 years and over), minium of 1!

-Any organisation/business may enter more than one team

-Teams are responsible for bringing all tools etc required for their entry

-Building time is strictly limited to 3 hours

-A total area of 7m x 7m square is allocated to each team

-Castle or sand sculptures can be previously designed

-Only natural materials are allowed in the construction or decoration, however, beach-combed items may be permissible (but not from another team’s area!)

-Powder paint maybe used for decorative purposes but in the event of a tie the entry with the least number of imported items will be judged the winner

-No plant machinery may be used, e.g. earth movers, piling rigs etc!

-No scaffolding is allowed

-No additives are to be used; e.g. cement, lime etc

-No ‘live’ materials/animals to be used in the construction or decoration

-Each team will be responsible for clearing away their plot at the end of the competition and any other equipment

-If it’s going to be hot and sunny please remember SLIP on a T-shirt, SLAP on the sunscreen and SLOP on a hat!!!

JUNIOR/KIDS RULES 15- YEARS OLD. ENTRY £10 PER TEAM

-Teams to have a maximum number of four juniors/kids (15 years and under)

-Teams are responsible for bringing all tools etc required for their entry. NO metal building tools.

-Building time is strictly limited to 1 hour

-A total area of 2m x 2m square is allocated to each team

-Castle or sand sculptures can be previously designed

-Only natural materials are allowed in the construction or decoration, however, beach-combed items may be permissible (but not from another team’s area!)

-No Powder paint to be used. Must be natural.

-No plant machinery may be used, e.g. earth movers, piling rigs etc!

-No scaffolding is allowed

-No additives are to be used; e.g. cement, lime etc

-No ‘live’ materials/animals to be used in the construction or decoration especially siblings!

-Each team will be responsible for clearing away their plot at the end of the competition and any other equipment

-If it’s going to be hot and sunny please remember SLIP on a T-shirt, SLAP on the sunscreen and SLOP on a hat!!!

ENTERTAINMENT

Peter Sawyer will be on stage from 11.00am warming up and getting ready for the start of the National Sandcastle Competition.

Like all events in Westward Ho! it will be special, we will add some surprises to make sure the construction crews spirits are kept high. 


This area has some amazing musical talent, we have invited some of these superb people to join us for a musical mash up on stage. Why have one band/singer when you can have an amalgamation? 


Sandcastle sculpting is hard, gruelling work...As with all exercise a good warm up is necesary, this will be done Westward Ho! style for the adults and kids!


We want you to make memories with us here , get sandy feet, have a cream tea, drink an ale, listen, watch and enjoy.

As this event is very weather dependent we have set a 2nd date just in case!
